Eatnua on Riverside Walk is the borough's newest zero food hygiene rating; Kang Nam in New Malden is up from 0 to 3. All 26 September ratings so far are 4 or 5.

Eatnua Riverside Kingston, at 4 Riverside Walk, has been given a food hygiene rating of 0. That is the lowest rating there is, and it means urgent improvement is necessary.

The rating comes from an inspection by Kingston Council’s food safety team on 25 August. It was published on the Food Standards Agency register after we last read it in full on 5 September.

There is better news in New Malden. Kang Nam, at 19 High Street, was one of the borough’s five zero ratings when we reported on New Malden’s ratings last month. It was re-inspected on 29 August and is now rated 3, generally satisfactory.

What the inspectors found at Eatnua

The register publishes three scores behind every rating. Lower is better, and a score of 0 is the best possible.

Area inspected Eatnua Riverside Kingston, 25 August
Hygienic food handling 20: major improvement necessary
Cleanliness and condition of the building 15: improvement necessary
Management of food safety 20: major improvement necessary

Those scores add up to 55. Any total above 50 produces a rating of 0 under the scheme.

Kang Nam’s three scores are now 10 each, which is “generally satisfactory” in every area.

Kingston Wire has not approached Eatnua for comment. Every business has the right to appeal its rating in writing within 21 days of being told it, and a right of reply that the council publishes next to the rating. No reply is published against Eatnua. A business can also ask for a re-inspection once it has made improvements.

The borough’s five zeros now

Kang Nam’s move up and Eatnua’s arrival leave the total at five. Three are in New Malden and two in Kingston town centre.

Business Address Rated 0 on
Tree Stone Butchers 71-73 High Street, New Malden 5 September 2025
Ritzy Lounge 242 Kingston Road, New Malden 20 August 2025
Overlord Noodle 50 Clarence Street, Kingston 23 January 2026
Midam Restaurant 183 High Street, New Malden 28 May 2026
Eatnua Riverside Kingston 4 Riverside Walk, Kingston 25 August 2026

None of the four older zeros has a new rating pending on the register. The Tree Stone Butchers rating is now more than a year old. A rating stands until the next inspection, so it records what an inspector found on one day.

Late August: four more ratings of 2

Inspections from the last days of August kept arriving on the register through September. When we read it on 5 September, it held 28 August ratings. It now holds 41.

Five of those 41 are rated 2, “improvement necessary”. Four of them were published after our last report:

  • Ha Ru, restaurant, 50 High Street, New Malden: inspected 29 August
  • Longdan Express, supermarket, 17 Wood Street, Kingston: inspected 20 August
  • JCM Star Convenience Store, 88 Leatherhead Road, Chessington: inspected 20 August
  • Save The World Club, mobile caterer, registered at 18 Southsea Road, Kingston: inspected 19 August

The fifth is New Malden Fish Bar on South Lane, which we reported last month.

What it means for you

  • Check before you book. Every rating is free to look up by name or postcode at ratings.food.gov.uk. It is the same register this report uses.
  • Look at the date. A rating reflects one inspection. Kang Nam shows how much can change at the next one.
  • Report a problem. If you have a concern about a food business in the borough, you can use the Food Standards Agency’s report a food problem service.
  • Ask to see the sticker. Businesses in England do not have to display their rating, but most with a 5 do.
